Carlos Mata
Carlos Mata works his sculptures with a very personal language. The sculptorsearches the essence of forms reducing to reality his pure lines. When you firstlook at his work, you will be surprised by the tenderness of his sculptures. Itis as if the artist had extracted the best part of the work he is presenting us(animals, people, things) to make us enjoy just the mere moment of reckoningwith them. Carlos Mata was born in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) in 1949. His influencescome from the ground and the landscape. Many of his works have the aspect ofmud, a material, which has been worked by various generations of people from theisland. The subtle and special sensitivity of this born-by-the-Mediterranean Seasculptor establishes an incredible combination of grace, style, and elegance inhis work. Mata shows in his sculptures the creativity of the villages as well asthe mysterious way of the prehistoric art. One can easily see the beautifulbulls and cows, the stylized horses, which show the symbolic meaning of theanimal. In fact, all or almost all of his sculptures symbolize a wish of freedomand the end to limitations of the human spirit. Every single work is mysteriousand allows the viewer to uncover this hidden meaning or just to simply gaze atthe form and line. Carlos Mata's sculptures are based on the memories of his childhood as hemakes an effort to obtain the original image that he could see when he was achild. This artist is able to find the original reality that defined his psychicalong time ago. This is why his sculptures are so simple and without manydetails, only some simple profiles, dark and essential, treated veryprimitively. They seem playful. but hide an intense concept. |
