I attempt to live with the nature of the world around me instead of trying to conquer it. I approach the materials in my work in the same way and am captivated by the natural flow of ink or paint. As in meditation, when the mind becomes quiet yet distinctly aware of the body's surroundings through a heightened awareness, I strive to achieve in my work a balance of stillness and stimulation. The solid areas of color in the work stabilize and quiet the painting. They hold the figure in place, defining it while internally the figure strives to break free.
